Sometimes the blueprint for healing comes at a point when you think you've mastered it, only for life to show you otherwise. This is that blueprint. Written during the summer of 2012 from the town of Asilah, Morocco during Ramadan, I somehow 'knew' to apply the principles of organic gardening and permaculture to my life, I didn't know that I'd do it again and again and again...
I’ve never been much of a gardener. I’d have to say a silent prayer or two over every daring cactus and/or bamboo brave enough to cross my threshold. I knew (and suspect that they did too) that in a few days time, they’d become compost. Then switched for a shiny green replacement. It’s not that I didn’t care for them. Maybe I cared a bit too much. “Since I over watered that last bunch, I won’t water these at all.” Which somehow made perfect sense to me at the time(s). Yes, I am aware that they come with instructions, but am I expected to read the little plastic stakes in the soil or the tabs tied around the neck of every (or any) plant? The funny thing is, I’ve been told many times that “You cannot kill a cactus,” and my favorite, “Bamboo takes care of itself.” Someone should have told that to the parade of mushy cacti and yellow bamboo that found themselves on death row for making just one simple mistake… looking resilient enough to come home with a self-professed black thumb. And for dying and not taking care of itself.

"It’s a bit difficult for me to describe this book. The phrase “self-help book that demonstrates how to use lessons from the garden to transform your life” comes to mind, but that isn’t all the way accurate. Because this book is much more than just SELF help. Yes, it contains wisdom, examples, and exercises that will help you remember and better embody the true version of yourself (and put yourself on a path to living the life you really want to live), but it will also help you form healthier relationships with other individuals, with communities, and with the entire planet (which I think is much-needed during these times we are living in.) Reading it didn’t FEEL like reading many other self-help books I’ve read, either. It didn’t feel like something I “had to” do, or “should” do, in order to fix things or attract success. Rather, reading All You Need Are Seeds feels more like talking to a smart, hilarious friend about life, travelling, learning hard lessons, and growing organic food. Like a conversation that starts off about one thing and ends up with both participants exchanging stories, uncovering connections between topics, and learning new things about each other and themselves along the way. The assignments would be helpful all on their own, but the way the author “plants” them among stories from her own life makes them even more effective. Deep self-reflection requires us to be vulnerable and honest with ourselves about things we’re not necessarily proud of. By doing this work “out loud” on the page, walls makes it easier to let go of shame and be real with ourselves. Plus, her writing style is so easy and enjoyable to read, and that definitely helps the work of inner gardening feel a lot less like work. I’m very grateful for the gift she has given the world through this book."
